FERPECLE PUMPING STATION (altitude 1896 m)

The Ferpècle pumping station, fed by water from the glacier of the same name, is situated in the depths of the Val d’Hérens. Each year, 3 pumps send approximately 60 million cubic metres of water 212 metres upwards towards the Arolla valley, via the La Maya reservoir. The total flow rate from the station is 8.4 m3 per second.

The facility is hidden inside the mountain. Only a dam and a sand trap are visible. To prevent floodwater penetrating the installations, the intake at Ferpècle has a flow limiter system restricting entry to the sand trap.
