The story of hydraulic energy in Switzerland began early in the twentieth century. The main public and private electricity companies in Switzerland started businesses such as Energie de l’Ouest Suisse (EOS), which was founded in 1919.

The aim of these companies was to make rational and intensive use of Switzerland’s hydraulic energy resources by creating a large and powerful very high voltage network extending throughout the country. This network connected the major power generation centres to one another and also connected to foreign electricity networks.

Afterwards, the Valais became part of the story of hydraulic energy – the heroic era of the dams. It was emblematic in more ways than one, reflecting transformations in society, technological developments, and changes in work and working conditions.
