SOCIAL LIFE

An employee welfare service, organised activities, weekly film shows, a library and a games room – everything was done to make workers’ leisure time pleasurable. A company newspaper, Le Choucas, appeared from October 1953 until December 1962. It was both the voice of the community, and the glue which held it together.
On large sites, such as those at Arolla and Cheilon, the underground workers formed a brass band, a choir and a football club. A skiing race, the trophée des mineurs, was organised every year.

Le Ritz

The tradition of temporary huts came to an end during the winter of 1953-1954. The main accommodation building at Le Chargeur was built in just a few months, using prefabricated components. The workers christened it Le Ritz.
