GORNERLI MULTI-PURPOSE RESERVOIR

According to the Swiss Federal Government’s Energy Strategy 2050, renewable power production is to be expanded – especially in the winter months when Switzerland is dependent on electricity imports. To this end, the Swiss Federal Government has worked with environmental associations and interest groups to identify 16 expansion projects at the Hydropower Round Table. The Gornerli multi-purpose reservoir is the largest of these projects. With a maximum of 650 million kWh of winter electricity, the Gornerli covers around a third of the potential of all projects. This corresponds to the annual electricity needs of around 140,000 households. But that’s not all: as a multi-purpose reservoir, the Gornerli helps to significantly improve regional flood protection and secure the supply of drinking water in the long term.
