GORNERLI MULTI-PURPOSE RESERVOIR

The Energy Strategy 2050 aims to increase the production of renewable electricity, especially in winter, when Switzerland depends on imports. With this in mind, the Confederation defined 16 expansion projects at a round table on hydropower, in collaboration with environmental associations and interest groups. The Gornerli multi-purpose reservoir is the largest of these projects. Producing a maximum of 650 million kWh of winter electricity, Gornerli caver around one third of the required potential, corresponding to the annual electricity needs of around 140,000 households. And that’s not all: as a multi-purpose reservoir, Gornerli plays a key role in protecting the region from flooding while securing the long-term water supply.
